Sodium citrate solution is an aqueous citrate buffer used as a pH-stabilizing and calcium-chelating reagent in biochemical and microbiological workflows. It provides consistent buffering capacity in the mildly acidic range and is suitable for sample preparation, reagent conditioning, and process control where citrate ions are required.

Applications include calcium-dependent anticoagulation in blood handling, pH adjustment in buffer systems, and use as a component in purification, elution, and wash steps for proteins and nucleic acids. It is compatible with routine laboratory methods that utilize citrate for ionic strength modulation or metal ion sequestration.

  • 1M Sodium Citrate
  • Buffer Preparation (pH Control): Stock solution for preparing citrate buffers at pH 6.0 to maintain stable conditions in biochemical and molecular biology workflows.

  • Enzyme Assays: Provides a consistent pH 6.0 environment (citrate buffer) for acid-active enzymes and for chelating divalent cations that affect enzyme activity.

  • Antigen Retrieval (IHC): Used as citrate buffer, pH 6.0, for heat-induced epitope retrieval in immunohistochemistry on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues.

  • Nuclease Inhibition: Chelates Mg2+ to help reduce RNase/DNase activity and stabilize nucleic acids during extraction and storage.

  • Microbiological Differentiation Tests: Component and carbon source in Simmons citrate agar for identifying members of Enterobacteriaceae (e.g., Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae).

  • Anticoagulation/Cell Processing: Utilized to chelate Ca2+ in blood and platelet handling workflows to prevent coagulation (prepare working dilutions from 1M Sodium Citrate).

  • Protein and Metalloprotease Studies: Applied as a mild chelating buffer to modulate activity of metal-dependent proteins and proteases in assays.

  • Nanoparticle Synthesis: Source of citrate ions for the reduction and stabilization of gold nanoparticles (Turkevich method) using sterile 1M Sodium Citrate stock.

  • pH: 6.00 ± 0.10
