Yeast Peptone Dextrose Agar Plates
Yeast extract, peptone, and dextrose (YPD) agar plates are a rich, nonselective solid growth medium formulated to support robust growth of yeast and fungi by providing essential nutrients, amino acids, vitamins, and an easily metabolized carbon source. They are used for culturing, maintenance, isolation, and enumeration of yeast or other fungi in research, fermentation, environmental monitoring, QC, and biomanufacturing applications.
YPD agar is composed of yeast extract and peptone (or an animal-free peptone alternative, like soytone) as sources of nitrogen, amino acids, vitamins, and growth factors, with dextrose serving as the primary carbon and energy source. Agar is included as the solidifying agent to provide a stable surface for yeast colony growth.
Yeast peptone (YP) agar contains yeast extract and peptone to support yeast growth but does not include a defined carbon source. YPD agar builds on this formulation by adding dextrose, enabling faster growth and higher biomass production.
Yes, our nonselective and selective YPD, YPAD, and potato dextrose agar are standard media widely used for routine culturing, maintenance, isolation, and enumeration of yeast. The rich nutrient composition supports rapid, reproducible growth across a broad range of fungi.
YPD agar can support the growth of many non-filamentous fungi and some yeasts beyond Saccharomyces species. However, specialized media, like potato dextrose agar plates, may be more appropriate for filamentous fungi or diagnostic applications.
Our YPD agar plates are supplied pre-poured and ready to use, eliminating the need for media preparation. Our extensive selection of agar plates all go through rigorous quality control testing to ensure sterility and consistency across batches. To prepare YPD agar plates yourself, you can dissolve yeast extract, peptone, dextrose, and agar in water, then sterilize and pour the media into sterile plates under aseptic conditions.
We sell YPD agar plates with selective supplements, including antibiotics (for example, Geneticin (G418), Hygromycin-B, and ZeocinⓇ), sorbitol, tartaric acid, or adenine hemisulfate. For custom products, including different formulations, plate formats, antibiotic or additive combinations, carbon sources, and more, just start a custom order, and we can manufacture plates to your exact specifications.
Our nonselective YPD and potato dextrose agar plates can be stored at room temperature for 300 days. In general, YPD and potato dextrose agar plates with additives should be refrigerated, but be sure to read the detailed storage instructions for your specific product.
