Brain Heart Infusion Agar Plates

Our Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) agar plates are pre-poured and formulated to support the growth of fastidious and non-fastidious microorganisms that require enriched growth conditions. BHI agar is widely used in clinical microbiology, pharmaceutical quality control, and research laboratories for the isolation, cultivation, enumeration, and maintenance of a broad range of bacteria and fungi.

What is BHI agar?

Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) agar is a solid, nutrient-rich microbiological medium prepared from infusions of calf brain and beef heart tissues, combined with peptones, dextrose, sodium chloride, disodium phosphate, and agar. This formulation provides essential amino acids, peptides, carbohydrates, and growth factors that support the robust growth of fastidious and non-fastidious microbes.

Because of its enriched composition, BHI agar is commonly used for culturing streptococci, staphylococci, enterococci, Listeria species, and other clinically relevant bacteria, as well as yeast and molds. BHI agar plates can be used in non-selective formulations, with additional fermentable sugars such as sucrose, or with various types of antibiotics, serving as a foundational medium in clinical diagnostics, environmental monitoring of food and water, or academic and industrial microbiology research.

Why choose our BHI agar?

Our BHI agar plates are supplied as sterile, ready-to-use, pre-poured plates, eliminating preparation time and reducing batch-to-batch variability in microbiology workflows. We provide a wide variety of BHI agar in multiple formats and formulations to support diverse QC and clinical, pharmaceutical, environmental, food, and academic laboratory applications, including “deep fill” plates for long incubations or anaerobic growth.

We manufacture all of our agar plate products with strict quality control to ensure optimal performance, consistent formulation, and sterility. We stock an extensive selection of ready-to-use formulations and can also efficiently manufacture custom BHI agar products to meet your requirements, including tailored plate formats and formulations with specialized raw materials and antibiotic combinations.

Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) agar is a nutrient-rich, solid medium used to cultivate fastidious and non-fastidious microorganisms. It is commonly used in non-selective and selective applications for clinical microbiology, pharmaceutical QC, environmental monitoring, and research laboratories to support organisms that require enriched growth conditions.

BHI agar is used to culture Streptococcus pneumoniae, Listeria monocytogenes, Leishmania promastigotes, and Clostridium difficile. It supports a wide range of fastidious and non-fastidious bacteria, as well as yeasts and molds.

BHI agar contains brain and heart infusions, peptones, dextrose, sodium chloride, disodium phosphate, and agar. Together, these components provide amino acids, peptides, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals for robust microbial growth.

We sell BHI agar in nonselective and selective formulations. Our selective BHI agar media includes streptomycin (50 µg/mL) or kanamycin (25 µg/mL). If you are interested in purchasing different BHI agar formulations, we can manufacture a custom product for you with modified components and up to 5 antibiotics.

Our nonselective BHI agar plates can be stored at room temperature for 300 days. BHI agar plates containing streptomycin or kanamycin should be refrigerated and have a shelf life of 90 or 365 days, respectively.
