What is BHI broth?

Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) broth is a nonselective microbiological medium formulated from infusions of brain and heart tissue, combined with peptones, dextrose, disodium phosphate, and sodium chloride. This composition supplies essential amino acids, peptides, carbohydrates, vitamins, and other growth factors required for the cultivation of fastidious and non-fastidious microbes, including bacteria, yeasts, and molds. BHI can be supplemented with blood, additional carbon sources, or antimicrobial agents for specific purposes.

BHI broth is commonly used for the cultivation and maintenance of streptococci, pneumococci, Listeria species, Neisseria species, and other clinically relevant microorganisms.

Why choose our BHI broth?

Our BHI broth is supplied as a sterile, ready-to-use liquid medium, eliminating preparation time and reducing variability in microbiology workflows. We offer a wide selection of BHI broth formulations that are optimized to support consistent microbial growth in suspension cultures for QC, environmental monitoring, and research applications.

We manufacture BHI broth using validated production processes and quality control to ensure lot-to-lot consistency and dependable performance, from routine culturing and strain maintenance to method development and quality testing.

BHI broth is a nutrient-rich, liquid medium used to cultivate fastidious and non-fastidious microorganisms. It is commonly used in nonselective or selective applications for clinical microbiology, pharmaceutical QC, environmental monitoring, and research laboratories to support organisms that require enriched growth conditions.

BHI broth supports a wide range of microorganisms, including streptococci, pneumococci, Listeria species, Neisseria species, and many other clinically and industrially relevant bacteria, yeast, or mold.

BHI broth contains brain and heart infusions, peptones, dextrose, sodium chloride, and disodium phosphate. Together, these components provide amino acids, peptides, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals for robust microbial growth. We sell standard formulations of BHI broth, modified formulations, and BHI broth supplemented with yeast extract and L-cysteine.

All of our BHI broth products are supplied ready to use, eliminating the need for media preparation.

Our BHI broth is sold in nonselective formulations but can be supplemented with antibiotics or other additives to support your specialized applications. If you are interested in custom formulations, we can manufacture a product to your exact specifications, tailoring container formats and QC testing and modifying formulations with additives and antibiotics.

BHI broth should typically be kept refrigerated and has a shelf life of 730 days. The storage instructions for your specific product can be found on your product label.
