Mannitol Salt Agar Plates
Mannitol salt agar (MSA) plates are used for the selective isolation and differentiation of Staphylococcus and Micrococcus species, particularly for identifying mannitol-fermenting organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus.
Mannitol salt agar (MSA) plates support the growth of salt-tolerant bacteria, most commonly Staphylococcus species. The high sodium chloride concentration inhibits the growth of many other bacteria.
Mannitol salt agar (MSA) differentiates bacteria based on their ability to ferment mannitol. Fermenters produce acid that turns the medium yellow, while non-fermenters leave the medium pink or red.
Mannitol salt agar (MSA) is both selective and differential: It’s selective due to high salt concentration and differential due to mannitol fermentation and pH color change.
Mannitol salt agar (MSA) plates should typically be stored at room temperature to maintain performance and shelf life. The storage instructions and expiration date for your specific product can be found on your product label.
