TB Agar Plates

Our Terrific Broth (TB) agar plates are pre-poured, nutrient-rich media formulated to support bacterial growth. TB agar is widely used in molecular biology laboratories for cloning, plasmid amplification, and recombinant protein expression, where enhanced biomass and productivity are required.
TB Agar Plates
What are TB agar plates?

Terrific Broth (TB) agar plates are solid, rich bacterial growth media containing tryptone, yeast extract, glycerol, and phosphate-buffering components. TB agar supports robust bacterial growth while maintaining pH stability during extended incubation, making it ideal for high-yield cloning and plasmid production workflows.

TB agar plates are commonly used to culture E. coli and other non-fastidious bacterial strains used for generating recombinant DNA and protein expression. Compared to standard LB agar, TB agar plates often yield larger colonies and higher cell densities, which support downstream molecular biology and applications.

Why choose Teknova’s TB agar plates?

Our Terrific Broth (TB) agar plates are supplied as ready-to-use pre-poured plates, eliminating in-house media preparation and reducing variability. Our TB agar plates provide consistent nutrient composition, reliable buffering capacity, and uniform colony growth.

We manufacture a selection of off-the-shelf TB agar plates, with options including antibiotics kanamycin (50 µg/mL) and carbenicillin (100 µg/mL), using validated processes and rigorous quality control to ensure sterility, performance, and lot-to-lot consistency. We also provide custom manufacturing services, with options including modified TB agar formulations, antibiotic combinations (up to 5), alternative plate formats, and bulk quantities to support specialized molecular biology workflows.

TB agar plates are used for high-density bacterial growth in cloning, plasmid propagation, and recombinant protein expression workflows, particularly with E. coli strains.

TB agar plates support the growth of non-fastidious bacteria, most commonly E. coli strains used in molecular biology and genetic engineering applications.

Compared to LB agar, TB agar contains additional buffering components and glycerol, which support higher cell densities and improved growth during extended incubation.

Yes. TB agar plates are compatible with antibiotic supplementation for plasmid selection and cloning workflows. We sell TB agar supplemented with kanamycin (50 µg/mL) or carbenicillin (100 µg/mL), and we also offer custom formulations with tailored antibiotic combinations. Learn more about our custom process.

TB agar plates should typically be refrigerated to maintain performance and shelf life. The storage instructions and expiration date for your specific product can be found on your product label.
