Mueller Hinton Agar Plates

Our Mueller-Hinton agar (MHA) plates are pre-poured, non-selective media formulated for antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST). Mueller-Hinton agar is the global standard medium for Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion testing for clinical microbiology, pharmaceutical testing, and research labs, supporting reproducible antibiotic diffusion and reliable zone-of-inhibition measurements.

What are MHA plates?

Mueller-Hinton agar (MHA) plates are a defined, non-selective solid culture medium composed of beef infusion, casein hydrolysate, starch, and agar. This formulation supports uniform bacterial growth while allowing consistent diffusion of antimicrobial agents, making MHA agar the reference standard for antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) by disk diffusion, as mandated by CLSI and EUCAST.

MHA plates are commonly used to culture non-fastidious bacteria, including E. coli, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, and other clinically relevant pathogens. We offer Mueller-Hinton agar plates in multiple formulations, including Mueller-Hinton II agar plates and other cation-adjusted formulations.

Why choose Teknova’s MHA plates?

Our Mueller-Hinton agar (MHA) plates are supplied as ready-to-use pre-poured plates, eliminating in-house media preparation and reducing variability across testing workflows. Our MHA plates provide consistent agar depth, uniform growth, and reliable antibiotic diffusion, resulting in accurate and reproducible AST results.

We manufacture a variety of ready-to-ship MHA plates, including Mueller-Hinton II agar plates and various plate formats. All our agar products are manufactured using validated processes and undergo rigorous quality control testing to ensure growth performance and lot-to-lot consistency. Our team also offers custom manufacturing options, including supplemented formulations, alternative plate formats, and bulk quantities to support a wide variety of microbiology needs.

Mueller-Hinton agar (MHA) plates are primarily used for antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), including Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion assays. They are the standard medium used to evaluate the effectiveness of antibiotics against bacterial pathogens.

Mueller-Hinton agar plates support the growth of non-fastidious bacteria, including E. coli, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, and other clinically relevant organisms commonly tested in AST workflows.

Mueller-Hinton agar provides consistent composition, controlled cation content, and reliable antibiotic diffusion, which are critical for accurate and reproducible zone-of-inhibition measurements in susceptibility testing.

Yes. Mueller-Hinton agar plates can be supplemented with other additives to support the testing of fastidious and non-fastidious organisms. We can manufacture custom MHA formulations and plate formats with industry-leading turnaround times so we don't slow down your workflow.

Mueller-Hinton agar plates should typically be stored at room temperature to maintain performance and shelf life. The storage instructions and shelf life for your specific product can be found on your product label.
