What are R2A agar plates?

R2A agar plates, also called Reasoner’s 2A agar plates, are low-nutrient culture media designed for the isolation and enumeration of heterotrophic bacteria, particularly those recovered from potable water systems and environmental samples. Unlike nutrient-rich media such as LB, R2A agar encourages the recovery of slower-growing microorganisms by providing a less competitive growth environment. R2A agar plates are widely used in drinking water analysis, purified water monitoring, environmental microbiology, pharmaceutical quality control, and microbiology research.
