R2A Agar Plates are a low-nutrient agar medium for the recovery and enumeration of heterotrophic bacteria from treated drinking water, bottled water, and environmental samples. The formulation contains peptone, tryptone, casamino acids, yeast extract, sodium pyruvate, soluble starch, phosphate buffer, magnesium, and agar to provide conditions favorable for slow-growing and chlorine-stressed organisms.

  • 0.025% Proteose Peptone #3
  • 0.025% Tryptone
  • 0.05% Casamino Acids
  • 0.05% Yeast Extract
  • 0.03% Sodium Pyruvate
  • 0.05% Soluble Starch
  • 0.03% Potassium Phosphate Dibasic
  • 0.005% Magnesium Sulfate Heptahydrate
  • 2.00% Nobel Agar
  • Heterotrophic Plate Count (HPC) for Water: Enumeration of total heterotrophic bacteria in potable, bottled, surface, and distribution system water, including chlorine-stressed cells.

  • Pharma/Biotech Water Monitoring: Recovery of low-nutrient, slow-growing microbes in PW/WFI systems and cleanroom utilities.

  • Oligotroph Isolation: Isolation and cultivation of slow-growing oligotrophic bacteria from low-nutrient environments.

  • Biofilm Sampling: Recovery of biofilm-associated bacteria from pipes, RO systems, cooling towers, and dental unit waterlines.

  • Food & Beverage Process Water Testing: Microbial quality checks of process water and ice in production environments.

  • Disinfection Efficacy Studies: Assessment of residual microbial populations and recovery of disinfectant-injured cells.

  • Membrane Filtration Plating: Use with membrane filters for quantitative water testing and colony enumeration.

  • Environmental Isolate Recovery: Culturing of stressed or nutrient-limited bacteria such as Pseudomonas, Sphingomonas, Acinetobacter, Flavobacterium, and Aeromonas.

  • Colony Morphology & Purification: Isolation and subculture of environmental microbes for identification workflows.

  • Extended/Low-Temp Incubation: Long-incubation counts at 20–28 °C to enhance recovery of slow growers.
