Potato Dextrose Agar Plates are ready-to-use agar plates for the cultivation and enumeration of yeasts and molds from environmental, food, and other sample types. The carbohydrate and nutrient base supports fungal growth and sporulation.

Common applications include isolation, maintenance, and counts of filamentous fungi and yeasts from surfaces, air samples, raw materials, and finished products. Incubation at 25–30 °C is typical for many molds and yeasts; acidification or selective supplements may be used to reduce bacterial overgrowth when required.

Representative organisms include molds such as Aspergillus spp. and Penicillium spp., and yeasts such as Saccharomyces spp. Plates are supplied pre-poured and are suitable for standard microbiological workflows.

  • Potato Dextrose Agar
  • Cultivation of Yeasts and Molds: Supports robust growth of fungi for routine culture and maintenance.

  • Enumeration in Food and Beverage Testing: Used for total yeast and mold counts in foods, juices, beer, and dairy.

  • Environmental Monitoring: Applied as settle/contact plates to capture airborne and surface fungal contaminants in cleanrooms and labs.

  • Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Bioburden Testing: Detects fungal contamination in raw materials, intermediates, and finished products.

  • Fungal Isolation and Purification: Enables isolation of pure fungal colonies from mixed samples.

  • Plant Pathology: Cultivates phytopathogenic fungi for identification, spore production, and pathogenicity studies.

  • Antifungal Screening: Used for susceptibility testing and potency assays of antifungal agents.

  • Mycotoxin Producer Screening: Supports growth and preliminary screening of mycotoxin-producing fungi.

  • Colony Morphology and Sporulation Studies: Provides nutrient-rich medium for phenotypic characterization of fungi.

  • Water and Environmental Sample Testing: Detects yeasts and molds in potable, process, and environmental waters.
