Kanamycin Sulfate is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used for antimicrobial selection and maintenance of genetic constructs carrying kanamycin resistance markers. It inhibits prokaryotic protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, providing activity against many Gram-negative bacteria and select Gram-positive species, and is commonly used in cloning workflows with E. coli.

This compound is water-soluble and suitable for preparation of sterile working solutions by filtration. Typical use includes selection of kanamycin-resistant transformants and maintenance of plasmids in bacterial culture. It conforms to compendial quality standards associated with USP-grade materials when used as Kanamycin Sulfate, USP Grade.

  • Kanamycin Sulfate
  • USP Grade
  • Bacterial Selection and Plasmid Maintenance: Selects and maintains plasmids carrying kanamycin resistance in transformed Escherichia coli and other bacteria.

  • Microbiology Media Supplement: Added to LB/agar and broth to enable growth of kanamycin-resistant clones and suppress susceptible contaminants.

  • Recombinant Protein Expression in Bacteria: Maintains expression vectors during shake-flask and bioreactor cultures of Escherichia coli.

  • Plant Transformation and Tissue Culture Selection: Selects transgenic plant cells expressing nptII during regeneration after Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation.

  • Agrobacterium Plasmid Selection: Maintains binary and helper plasmids in Agrobacterium tumefaciens prior to plant transformation.

  • Cell Culture Contamination Control: Supplement for mammalian, insect, and plant cell culture media to reduce bacterial contamination.
