Kanamycin Sulfate, USP Grade is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used in microbiology and molecular biology for the selection and maintenance of kanamycin-resistant strains and plasmids. It is commonly applied for antibiotic selection in Gram-negative bacteria such as E. coli and is also active against many Gram-positive organisms.

Kanamycin acts by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, disrupting protein synthesis and inhibiting bacterial growth. It is water-soluble and suitable for preparing aqueous solutions for laboratory use.

  • Kanamycin Sulfate
  • USP Grade
  • Plasmid Selection in Escherichia coli: Selects and maintains kanamycin-resistant plasmids in cloning and expression workflows.

  • Bacterial Selection in Gram-Negative Species: Enables selection in organisms such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa carrying kanamycin-resistance markers.

  • Agrobacterium tumefaciens Maintenance: Maintains binary vectors and helper plasmids during plant transformation workflows.

  • Plant Tissue Culture Selection (nptII): Selects transformed plant cells expressing neomycin phosphotransferase II in regeneration media.

  • Yeast Genetics (KanMX Marker): Provides selection for gene knockouts and integrations in Saccharomyces cerevisiae using the KanMX cassette.

  • Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (MIC/Disc): Used in assays to determine bacterial sensitivity and resistance profiles.

  • Contamination Control in Media: Suppresses bacterial contaminants in mixed or sensitive cultures where kanamycin resistance is absent.

  • Cyanobacteria and Algal Selection: Supports selection in organisms like Synechocystis engineered with kanamycin resistance.
