Gentamicin Solution is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used for selection of gentamicin-resistant bacteria and maintenance of plasmids carrying gentamicin resistance markers. In molecular cloning workflows, it is applied to culture media to facilitate the recovery of transformants in hosts such as E. coli.

Gentamicin exhibits activity against a broad range of aerobic Gram-negative bacteria and some Gram-positive species by inhibiting protein synthesis via binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. It is commonly used in bacterial selection protocols and for routine control of bacterial contamination in cell culture applications.
