Carbenicillin solution is a beta-lactam antibiotic preparation for selection and maintenance of plasmid-bearing, beta-lactamase–expressing bacteria in molecular biology workflows. It is commonly used with E. coli to select transformants carrying ampicillin/carbenicillin-resistance markers and to maintain plasmids during propagation. Compared to ampicillin, carbenicillin is less prone to spontaneous degradation in culture, helping minimize satellite colony formation on selective plates.

Suitable for preparing selective liquid media and agar plates in cloning, strain construction, and routine plasmid maintenance. Store protected from light at low temperature and avoid repeated freeze–thaw by aliquoting.

  • 100mg/mL Carbenicillin Disodium Salt
  • 50% Ethyl Alcohol
  • Plasmid Selection in E. coli: Selects for bla (β-lactamase)–encoded ampicillin/carbenicillin resistance in cloning and routine propagation.

  • Maintenance of Expression Constructs: Preserves plasmid-bearing E. coli in liquid cultures and agar plates during protein expression and strain storage.

  • Cloning and Transformation Workflows: Used post-transformation for recovery and selective plating of recombinant colonies.

  • Blue-White Screening: Supports selection and screening on X-gal/IPTG plates for insert verification in E. coli.

  • Reduced Satellite Colonies: Preferred over ampicillin to minimize satellite colony formation on plates.

  • Media Supplementation: Added to LB/TB/agar to prepare carbenicillin-selective media at standard working concentrations.

  • Protein Production in E. coli: Maintains plasmid selection during small- to large-scale expression cultures.

  • Plant Tissue Culture Support: Applied to eliminate residual Agrobacterium tumefaciens after transformation and reduce bacterial contamination.
