Carbenicillin Disodium Salt is a beta-lactam antibiotic of the penicillin class that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by targeting penicillin-binding proteins. It is water-soluble and commonly used in microbiology and molecular biology workflows for beta-lactam–based selection and maintenance of plasmids.

In cloning and strain work, it is used to select plasmid-bearing transformants in E. coli, and is also noted for activity against certain Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Typical working concentrations are 50–100 µg/mL in liquid media or agar.

Prepare aqueous stock solutions using sterile, nuclease-free water and filter-sterilize. Store aliquots at −20 °C to limit freeze–thaw cycles and protect from light.

  • Carbenicillin Disodium Salt
  • USP Grade
  • Bacterial Plasmid Selection: Selects bla-bearing transformants in Escherichia coli during cloning and subcloning.

  • Protein Expression in E. coli: Maintains beta-lactamase–encoded plasmids in recombinant Escherichia coli expression strains.

  • Selective Media Preparation: Added to LB/agar to create selection plates for beta-lactam–resistant colonies.

  • Reduced Satellite Colonies: Used as a more stable alternative to ampicillin to minimize satellite colony formation in blue-white screening.

  • Plant Tissue Culture: Eliminates residual Agrobacterium tumefaciens after transformation and supports regeneration steps.

  • Contamination Control: Suppresses Gram-negative contaminants such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa in mixed cultures.

  • Cell Culture Antibiotic: Employed in non-therapeutic applications to reduce bacterial contamination in media.
