Carbenicillin Disodium Salt is a beta-lactam antibiotic used in microbiology and molecular biology to inhibit cell wall synthesis in susceptible bacteria and to maintain plasmid selection in cultures. In cloning and expression workflows, it is commonly employed to select and propagate plasmid-bearing, beta-lactam–resistant E. coli strains in liquid media and agar plates.

The compound is water-soluble and typically used at 50–100 µg/mL in growth media. Concentrated aqueous stock solutions are prepared and sterilized by filtration, then stored frozen in aliquots to minimize freeze–thaw cycles. Applications include maintenance of antibiotic selection during propagation of recombinant strains and routine culture of beta-lactam–resistant E. coli.

  • Carbenicillin Disodium Salt
  • USP Grade
  • Plasmid Selection in Escherichia coli: Maintains AmpR (bla) plasmids in cloning and protein expression workflows using carbenicillin-supplemented LB agar/broth.

  • Ampicillin Alternative: Provides greater stability than ampicillin in media, reducing satellite colony formation on selection plates.

  • Bacterial Contamination Control: Broad-spectrum β-lactam used to suppress unwanted bacterial growth in laboratory media and buffers.

  • Plant Transformation Workflows: Applied in plant tissue culture to suppress/eliminate Agrobacterium tumefaciens after transformation and during regeneration.

  • Agrobacterium Vector Maintenance: Selects for AmpR-bearing binary vectors in Agrobacterium tumefaciens cultures.

  • Pseudomonas Applications: Utilized for selection or inhibition studies involving Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other Gram-negative bacteria sensitive to carbenicillin.

  • Routine Media Supplementation: Added to LB, TB, and other bacterial growth media for selective cultivation of transformed cells.

  • Competent Cell Workflows: Used post-transformation to recover and select recombinants carrying β-lactamase–conferring plasmids.
