1 M Calcium Chloride Solution is an aqueous calcium chloride preparation providing 1.0 mol/L CaCl₂. It supplies Ca²⁺ and Cl⁻ ions for calcium-dependent applications in molecular biology and microbiology, including preparation of chemically competent E. coli, facilitation of bacteriophage adsorption, and divalent cation supplementation in buffers and assays.

This solution is suitable for use in workflows requiring controlled calcium ion concentration, such as transformation buffers for E. coli, phage infection steps, and protocols that rely on Ca²⁺ to stabilize nucleic acids or proteins.

  • 1M Calcium Chloride Dihydrate
  • Bacterial Transformation (CaCl2 method): Used to prepare chemically competent Escherichia coli and facilitate heat-shock plasmid uptake.

  • Bacteriophage Adsorption: Enhances infection efficiency of phages (e.g., lambda) on Escherichia coli by promoting virion binding.

  • Calcium Phosphate Transfection: Provides Ca2+ for forming calcium phosphate–DNA precipitates used in mammalian cell transfection.

  • Alginate Gelation and Encapsulation: Crosslinks sodium alginate to create hydrogels/beads for cell or enzyme encapsulation.

  • Buffer and Media Supplementation: Supplies Ca2+ to PBS/HBSS and culture media formulations requiring physiological calcium.

  • Enzyme Assays and Stabilization: Delivers Ca2+ for calcium-dependent enzymes (e.g., DNase I) and stabilizes proteases such as trypsin.

  • Competency and Transformation Buffers: Component of CaCl2- and CaCl2/MgCl2-based solutions used in cloning workflows.
