Chloramphenicol, USP Grade, is a phenicol-class antimicrobial compound that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding the 50S ribosomal subunit. It exhibits activity against a broad range of organisms, including Gram-positive and Gram-negative species such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.

Conforming to United States Pharmacopeia specifications, this material is suitable for compendial testing, analytical method development, and research applications that require a well-characterized antibiotic standard. Typical laboratory uses include serving as a reference chemical in chromatographic and spectrophotometric assays.

Appearance is a crystalline solid; soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and methanol, with limited aqueous solubility. Store in a cool, dry environment protected from light.

  • Microbiological Media Supplementation: Added to fungal/yeast media to suppress bacterial contaminants during culture.

  • Cell-Free Translation Inhibition: Inhibits prokaryotic protein synthesis in in vitro translation controls.

  • CAT Reporter Assays: Utilized in chloramphenicol acetyltransferase assays as a substrate/selection reagent.

  • Plant Tissue Culture Decontamination: Occasionally used to reduce bacterial contamination in explant cultures.
