Chloramphenicol in methanol is a ready-to-use antibiotic stock solution for laboratory applications in microbial genetics and cell biology. It is commonly used to prepare selective media and to maintain plasmids encoding chloramphenicol acetyltransferase in bacterial cultures, including E. coli strains bearing compatible resistance markers.

Chloramphenicol inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding the 50S ribosomal subunit, providing a tool for selection and for mechanistic studies of translation. The methanolic format is miscible with aqueous culture media and buffers. Store tightly closed at low temperature and protect from light to maintain integrity.

  • 34mg/mL Chloramphenicol in Methanol
  • Antibiotic Selection in Cloning: Selects for chloramphenicol-resistant plasmids (cat) in Escherichia coli on agar plates and in liquid media.

  • Plasmid Maintenance: Maintains chloramphenicol-marked vectors during routine culture of Escherichia coli.

  • BAC/Fosmid Propagation: Supports selection and stable propagation of bacterial artificial chromosomes and fosmids in Escherichia coli.

  • Co-Selection in Multi-Plasmid Systems: Enables simultaneous maintenance of multiple vectors with distinct resistance markers in Escherichia coli.

  • Media and Plate Supplementation: Convenient 34mg/mL Chloramphenicol in Methanol stock for preparing chloramphenicol-supplemented LB/agar.

  • Protein Synthesis Inhibition: Rapidly halts translation in bacteria (e.g., Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis) for ribosome profiling and chase experiments.

  • CAT Reporter Workflows: Provides chloramphenicol substrate/control for chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) assays.

  • Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing: Used to prepare chloramphenicol-impregnated discs for Kirby–Bauer and related assays.
