Chloramphenicol Solution in Methanol is an antibiotic stock suitable for laboratory workflows requiring a broad-spectrum inhibitor of bacterial protein synthesis. It is commonly used to prepare selective media for maintenance of chloramphenicol-resistant plasmids in E. coli and other bacteria, and for applications where suppression of prokaryotic translation is required.

The solution is miscible with aqueous media upon dilution, is light-sensitive, and should be stored tightly closed at low temperature to minimize degradation. Appropriate handling in a chemical fume hood and disposal according to institutional and regulatory guidelines are recommended.

  • 10mg/mL Chloramphenicol
  • Methyl Alcohol
  • Plasmid Selection in Bacteria: Selects and maintains cat-marked plasmids in E. coli and other susceptible bacteria using chloramphenicol resistance.

  • Co-Selection for Multi-Plasmid Systems: Enables simultaneous maintenance of multiple vectors (e.g., chloramphenicol + ampicillin/kanamycin) in recombinant E. coli protein expression workflows.

  • BAC/Fosmid Maintenance: Preserves chloramphenicol-resistant BACs/fosmids in E. coli during cloning and recombineering.

  • Helper Plasmid Retention in T7 Systems: Maintains chloramphenicol-resistant helper plasmids (e.g., pLysS/pLysE) in protein expression strains of E. coli.

  • Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing: Serves as a reference antibiotic for MIC and inhibition assays against organisms such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus.

  • Contamination Control: Suppresses bacterial contaminants in eukaryotic cell and yeast cultures when used at appropriate dilutions.

  • Protein Synthesis Inhibition Studies: Blocks prokaryotic translation for mechanistic studies and ribosome profiling in bacteria (e.g., E. coli).

  • Mitochondrial/Chloroplast Translation Inhibition: Inhibits organellar protein synthesis in mammalian and plant cells to dissect compartment-specific translation.
