0.5% Phenol Red Solution is an aqueous pH indicator used in microbiology and cell culture to visualize acid and base production in media. It displays a color change from yellow (acidic) to red (neutral) to fuchsia (alkaline), with a transition range of approximately pH 6.8–8.2.

Applications include incorporation into carbohydrate fermentation broths, urease tests, differential agar formulations, and tissue culture media to monitor pH changes associated with microbial metabolism or cell growth. It is commonly used with organisms such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus aureus. Store protected from light.

  • 0.5% Phenol Red in Water
  • Cell Culture pH Indicator: Monitors pH shifts in media under CO2 incubation, signaling acidification or alkalinization.

  • Contamination Screening in Culture: Rapid color change flags metabolic activity from unintended microbes such as Escherichia coli or Staphylococcus aureus.

  • Phenol Red Carbohydrate Broths: Detects microbial fermentation and gas production in diagnostic assays for enteric and staphylococcal species.

  • Buffer and Titration Endpoint Visualization: Provides clear visual endpoints when adjusting or validating buffer pH.

  • Enzyme and Metabolic Assays: Reports pH changes linked to enzyme kinetics or cellular respiration.

  • Bioreactor and Microfluidics Monitoring: Tracks pH dynamics and mixing in small-volume perfusion or flow systems.

  • CO2/Bicarbonate System Validation: Verifies proper CO2 levels and bicarbonate buffering capacity in culture media.

  • Leak and Dilution Tracing: Acts as a visible dye for quick checks of system integrity and dilution series setup.
