5M Calcium Chloride is a concentrated aqueous salt solution used in molecular cloning and microbiology workflows. In transformation protocols, calcium ions facilitate plasmid DNA uptake by competent E. coli cells. It is also employed in bacteriophage precipitation workflows and in buffer systems requiring defined calcium ion concentrations.

  • 5M Calcium Chloride
  • Chemically Competent Cell Preparation: Used to prepare heat-shock–competent Escherichia coli via the CaCl2 method.

  • Bacterial Transformation: Component of transformation buffers enabling plasmid uptake by Escherichia coli.

  • Bacteriophage Adsorption and Plaque Assays: Enhances phage binding and infection of Escherichia coli during plating.

  • Calcium Phosphate Transfection: Provides calcium ions for DNA–calcium phosphate co-precipitation in mammalian cell transfection.

  • Alginate Gelation and Microencapsulation: Crosslinks sodium alginate to form calcium alginate beads for encapsulating cells or biomolecules.

  • Enzyme Activation and Stabilization: Supplies Ca2+ required by calcium-dependent enzymes (e.g., DNase I, thermolysin) in assay buffers.

  • Media Supplementation: Adjusts calcium levels in microbial and mammalian culture media when elevated Ca2+ is required.
