Tryptic Soy Agar Plates are a general-purpose, nonselective solid medium for the cultivation and maintenance of a broad range of nonfastidious microorganisms. The formulation contains casein and soybean digests as peptide sources, sodium chloride for osmotic balance, and agar as the solidifying agent.

Applications include routine cultivation, enumeration of aerobic bacteria, and maintenance of laboratory strains across clinical, environmental, food, and industrial microbiology. Representative organisms that grow on this medium include Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and members of the family Enterobacteriaceae.

  • 1.5% Tryptone
  • 0.5% Soytone
  • 0.5% Sodium Chloride
  • 1.5% Agar
  • General Cultivation of Non-Fastidious Bacteria: Supports robust growth of organisms like Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa for routine culture and isolation.

  • Colony Isolation and Morphology Assessment: Used to streak and obtain isolated colonies for morphology, pigmentation, and purity checks.

  • Environmental Monitoring and Bioburden Testing: Employed for surface swabbing and settle plate monitoring in cleanrooms, labs, and production areas.

  • Food, Beverage, and Cosmetic QC: Enumeration and detection of aerobic bacteria, including Enterobacteriaceae, Salmonella spp., and Listeria spp., during routine quality control.

  • Clinical and Diagnostic Microbiology: Initial subculture from selective/indicator media and maintenance of stock cultures for routine testing.

  • Microbial Limit and Sterility Testing: Supports recovery of stressed organisms in pharmaceutical and water testing workflows.

  • Air and Surface Sampling: Used with impaction samplers or swabs to capture and enumerate airborne and contact flora.

  • Antimicrobial Screening (Pre-culture/Propagation): Growth of test strains (e.g., Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli) prior to susceptibility or MIC assays.

  • Teaching and Training: Standard medium in educational labs for basic microbiology techniques and demonstrations.
