Todd Hewitt Broth is a nutrient-rich liquid medium used for the cultivation and enrichment of streptococci, including group A and B organisms such as Streptococcus pyogenes and Streptococcus agalactiae, as well as other fastidious Gram-positive cocci like Enterococcus faecalis.

Common applications include pre-enrichment prior to isolation or susceptibility testing and propagation of streptococcal bacteriophages. When supplemented with selective agents or indicators, it is employed in protocols requiring targeted enrichment of specific streptococcal groups.

  • 3.00 % Todd Hewitt Broth
  • Cultivation and Enrichment of Streptococci: Supports robust growth of Group A (Streptococcus pyogenes) and Group B (Streptococcus agalactiae) using 3.00% Todd Hewitt Broth.

  • GBS Screening Enrichment: Used as a base medium (with optional supplements) for prenatal detection workflows targeting Streptococcus agalactiae.

  • Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing: Serves as a growth medium for broth-based susceptibility and bactericidal testing of streptococci and enterococci (e.g., Enterococcus faecalis).

  • Virulence Factor Expression Studies: Facilitates production and analysis of streptococcal hemolysins and other secreted factors.

  • Bacteriophage Propagation: Supports propagation of streptococcal bacteriophages in sensitive host strains.

  • General Cultivation of Fastidious Organisms: Promotes growth of fastidious gram-positive cocci such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and Enterococcus faecalis.

  • Quality Control of Streptococcal Cultures: Employed as a control medium in clinical and research microbiology laboratories.

  • Vaccine and Pathogenesis Research: Used to culture strains for in vitro assays investigating host–pathogen interactions of Streptococcus spp.

  • pH: 7.8 ± 0.2
