Triton X-100, Reagent Grade is a nonionic surfactant used in laboratory workflows for cell lysis, membrane permeabilization, and protein solubilization. It is miscible with water and commonly incorporated into buffers and solutions for biochemical and cell biology procedures.

Typical applications include preparation of lysates from mammalian cells and bacteria such as E. coli, extraction of membrane-associated proteins, inclusion in wash buffers for immunoassays, and sample preparation for electrophoresis and nucleic acid workflows. Suitable for routine research use where a nonionic surfactant is required.

  • Cell Lysis and Permeabilization: Gentle disruption of mammalian cells, yeast, and Escherichia coli to release cellular contents without denaturing proteins.

  • Membrane Protein Solubilization: Extraction of membrane proteins and complexes while preserving activity and native interactions.

  • Immunostaining/Immunofluorescence: Permeabilizes fixed cells and tissues to enhance antibody access for ICC/IF and IHC.

  • Western Blot/ELISA Wash Buffers: Reduces nonspecific binding and background during antibody incubation and washing steps.

  • DNA/RNA Extraction: Aids in nucleic acid purification by disrupting membranes and removing protein/lipid contaminants.

  • Virus and Envelope Disruption: Solubilizes lipid envelopes to inactivate enveloped viruses and facilitate downstream analysis.

  • Lipid Raft/DRM Studies: Used at low temperatures to isolate detergent-resistant membranes for raft analyses.

  • Additive to Buffers and Reagents: Minimizes protein aggregation and surface adsorption to plasticware during assays and storage.
