Tryptic Soy Agar is a general-purpose agar medium formulated with casein peptone (tryptone), soybean peptone (soytone), sodium chloride, and agar. It is used for the cultivation and maintenance of a broad range of nonfastidious microorganisms from clinical, environmental, and industrial samples.

Commonly used for routine culture, colony morphology observation, and maintenance of stock strains, it accommodates organisms such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and members of the family Enterobacteriaceae.

  • 1.5% Tryptone
  • 0.5% Soytone
  • 0.5% Sodium Chloride
  • 1.5% Agar
  • General-Purpose Cultivation: Supports robust growth of nonfastidious organisms (e.g., Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis).

  • Isolation of Pure Cultures: Used for streak plating to obtain isolated colonies from mixed clinical, food, or environmental samples.

  • Enumeration/Plate Counts: Determines aerobic bacterial counts in water, food, cosmetics, and environmental monitoring samples.

  • Bioburden and Environmental Monitoring: Employed in cleanrooms and manufacturing areas for surface/contact plates and air settle plates.

  • Sterility and QC Testing: Applied in routine quality control to assess microbial contamination in raw materials and finished products.

  • Maintenance of Stock Cultures: Used for routine subculture and short-term storage of bacterial strains on plates or slants.

  • Colony Morphology Assessment: Facilitates observation of colony characteristics, pigmentation, and hemolysis when supplemented with blood.

  • Recovery After Stress: Aids recovery of sublethally injured bacteria following sanitation, heat, or desiccation stress.

  • Base for Enriched Media: Serves as the base for blood agar and other supplements to support fastidious organisms (e.g., Streptococcus spp., Haemophilus spp.).

  • Microbial Identification Workflows: Provides consistent growth for downstream biochemical, MALDI-TOF, and other ID assays.
