1 M Sorbitol Solution is an aqueous osmolyte used to maintain osmotic balance in microbial and cell-based workflows. It supports procedures such as electroporation, competent cell preparation, spheroplasting, and buffer preparation where controlled osmotic conditions are required.

In microbiology, it is used as an osmotic stabilizer for yeasts and for Gram-negative bacteria such as E. coli, and may be included in wash or recovery steps, or in media to modulate water activity. It can also serve as a defined carbon source in culture and fermentation processes.

In molecular biology and biochemistry, it is used in enzyme and protein handling, dialysis buffers, and cell integrity studies. Supplied as a 1 M solution for direct dilution or use as specified by experimental protocols.

  • 1M Sorbitol Solution
  • Yeast Transformation and Spheroplasting: Provides osmotic stabilization during cell wall digestion and transformation workflows for Saccharomyces cerevisiae and other yeasts.

  • Electroporation Support (Yeast/Fungi): Maintains osmotic balance in pre- and post-pulse washes to improve cell viability and recovery.

  • Protoplast Formation and Regeneration: Stabilizes fungal and bacterial protoplasts (e.g., Bacillus subtilis) during enzymatic cell wall removal and plating.

  • Lytic Enzyme Buffers: Included with zymolyase/lyticase mixtures to generate and handle yeast spheroplasts.

  • Osmotic Stress Assays: Sets defined osmolarity for studying osmoregulation in microbes and cultured cells.

  • Protein and Enzyme Stabilization: Acts as a compatible osmolyte to enhance protein/enzyme stability during purification, storage, and freeze–thaw.

  • Fragile Cell Handling: Serves as an isotonic wash or resuspension medium for cell wall–deficient forms and delicate cells to minimize lysis.

  • Post-Electroporation Recovery Media Supplement: Added to recovery media to support survival of transformed yeast and fungal cells.
