20% SDS Solution is a ready-to-use aqueous preparation of sodium dodecyl sulfate intended for laboratory workflows requiring an anionic surfactant. It is commonly used to denature proteins for SDS-PAGE, disrupt cellular membranes during lysis, solubilize membrane proteins, and assist in nucleic acid extraction and plasmid purification workflows.

This solution disrupts noncovalent protein interactions and can interfere with enzymatic reactions; removal or dilution may be necessary prior to downstream steps such as PCR, reverse transcription, restriction digestion, or ligation. It is not suitable for applications requiring native protein structure or activity.

Note: SDS solutions can crystallize or precipitate at lower temperatures; gentle warming and mixing re-dissolve the surfactant. Store at ambient temperature to minimize precipitation. Handle with appropriate PPE; avoid contact with skin, eyes, and mucosa, and prevent aerosol generation. Dispose according to institutional and local regulations.

  • Detergent Additive in Running/Transfer Buffers: Provides consistent protein migration in SDS-PAGE and aids protein transfer to membranes.

  • Sample Clarification: Reduces protein aggregation to improve quantitation and chromatography loading.

  • Labware Decontamination: Denatures residual proteins on equipment and surfaces during cleanup.

  • Lipoprotein and Particle Disassembly: Disrupts lipid–protein complexes to analyze components individually.
