Potato Dextrose Broth is a general-purpose carbohydrate-rich liquid medium for the cultivation and maintenance of yeasts and molds.

The combination of complex potato-derived nutrients and dextrose provides carbon and growth factors suitable for fungal propagation in culture, and the medium’s acidic reaction helps limit bacterial overgrowth during mycological analyses.

  • Potato Dextrose Broth
  • Yeast and Mold Cultivation: Supports robust growth of fungi and yeasts from clinical, food, beverage, and environmental samples.

  • Microbial Enumeration: Used for counting yeasts and molds in quality control testing of foods, dairy, water, and air samples.

  • Fungal Isolation and Maintenance: Facilitates isolation and routine propagation of common fungi (e.g., Aspergillus, Penicillium, Fusarium, Candida, Saccharomyces).

  • Antifungal Susceptibility Testing: Employed for screening and MIC determination of antifungal agents against yeasts and molds.

  • Sporulation and Pigment Studies: Promotes sporulation and metabolite/pigment production for taxonomic and research applications.

  • Biomass and Metabolite Production: Generates fungal biomass for enzyme assays, secondary metabolites, and downstream analyses.

  • Seed and Plant Pathology: Recovers and examines phytopathogenic fungi from seeds and plant tissues.

  • Recovery of Stressed Fungi: Aids resuscitation of heat- or preservative-injured yeasts and molds after processing.

  • Starter Culture Preparation: Used to prepare active yeast inocula for fermentation research and process development.

  • pH: 5.10 ± 0.20
