Oatmeal Agar Plates are a carbohydrate-based solid medium formulated for the cultivation and morphological observation of filamentous fungi, actinomycetes, and selected oomycetes. The oatmeal component provides complex polysaccharides and micronutrients, and agar functions as the solidifying agent to produce a consistent gel matrix suitable for colony development and sporulation studies.

This medium is commonly employed for maintaining and characterizing species such as Aspergillus, Penicillium, and actinomycetes including Streptomyces, as well as oomycetes like Phytophthora and Pythium. It is used in microscopy, pigment assessment, and comparative morphology workflows where reproducible colony texture and surface features are required.

  • 6.00% Oatmeal
  • 1.35% Agar

  • Cultivation of Filamentous Fungi: Growth and isolation of molds for general mycology workflows and environmental samples.

  • Oomycete Isolation: Recovery and plating of plant-pathogenic oomycetes such as Phytophthora and Pythium from plant tissues, soil, and water.

  • Sporulation and Morphological Characterization: Promotes conidiation and diagnostic features in genera such as Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Fusarium for identification.

  • Actinomycete Cultivation: Supports growth of filamentous bacteria such as Streptomyces and Nocardia for isolation and screening.

  • Culture Maintenance: Routine subculture and preservation of fungal and oomycete strains for lab stocks.

  • Environmental and Plant Pathology Testing: Enumeration and recovery of fungal propagules from air, soil, seeds, and plant materials.
