Middlebrook 7H10 Agar Plates are a defined agar medium formulated for the cultivation and isolation of mycobacteria. The medium supports growth of members of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and many nontuberculous mycobacteria for colony development and downstream characterization.

Glycerol serves as a readily metabolizable carbon source for many mycobacterial species, while OADC enrichment provides oleic acid, albumin, dextrose, and catalase to supply nutrients and buffer against toxic by-products. The transparent gel matrix facilitates visual assessment of colony morphology.

  • 1.9% Middlebrook 7H10 Medium
  • 0.5% Glycerol
  • 10.0% OADC Enrichment Medium
  • Primary Isolation and Cultivation: Solid medium for recovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and other mycobacteria from decontaminated clinical specimens.

  • Colony Enumeration (CFU): Quantification of viable mycobacteria in cultures or infection models.

  • Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing: Proportion/MIC testing of drugs against Mycobacterium spp. on solid medium.

  • Subculture and Maintenance: Routine propagation and short-term storage of mycobacterial isolates.

  • Colony Morphology Assessment: Evaluation of growth rate, texture, and pigmentation of Mycobacterium colonies.

  • Selective Plating with Additives: Use with antibiotics or supplements to select for mutants or recombinant strains.

  • Non-tuberculous Mycobacteria Studies: Cultivation of species such as Mycobacterium avium complex, Mycobacterium kansasii, and Mycobacterium abscessus.

  • Clinical Laboratory Workflows: Parallel plating with 7H11 or LJ for comprehensive mycobacterial recovery.
