Marine Agar Plates are solid microbiological media prepared from Difco Marine Agar for the cultivation, isolation, and enumeration of marine heterotrophic bacteria from seawater, marine sediments, biofilms, and associated organisms. The seawater-based matrix provides ionic strength and osmotic balance appropriate for marine microorganisms and includes peptones and yeast-derived nutrients to support heterotrophic growth.

These plates are suitable for routine culture maintenance and colony isolation of marine bacteria such as Vibrio, Pseudoalteromonas, Shewanella, Photobacterium, and Marinobacter, and for general microbiological workflows requiring a marine-compatible solid medium.

  • 5.51% Difco Marine Agar
  • Isolation and Cultivation of Marine Heterotrophs: 5.51% Difco Marine Agar 2216 supports robust growth of seawater-requiring bacteria such as Vibrio, Alteromonas, Pseudoalteromonas, Shewanella, Photobacterium, and Marinobacter.

  • Total Viable Counts (TVC) of Seawater and Marine Samples: Standard medium for aerobic plate counts of marine bacteria from seawater, sediments, and biofilms.

  • Aquaculture Microbiological Monitoring: Routine surveillance of microbial load in hatcheries, recirculating systems, and larval rearing tanks.

  • Recovery of Stressed or Sublethally Injured Marine Bacteria: High-salt, nutrient-balanced matrix enhances recovery after environmental or processing stress.

  • Maintenance and Stock Plating of Marine Strains: Stable platform for routine subculturing and preserving characteristics of salt-requiring isolates.

  • Biofilm and Biofouling Community Assessments: Culturing surface-associated marine consortia from hulls, pipelines, and piers.

  • Seafood and Marine Product Quality Control: Enumeration and detection of spoilage and indicator organisms (e.g., Vibrio spp.) in processing environments.

  • Environmental and Bioremediation Studies: Isolation of hydrocarbon-degrading and metal-reducing marine bacteria (e.g., Marinobacter, Shewanella).

  • Ballast Water Microbiological Assessment: Cultivation-based monitoring of microbial load and community composition in ballast systems.

  • Marine Microbiome and Educational Labs: Teaching exercises and baseline culturing for community surveys of seawater and marine organisms.
