Hydrochloric Acid (aqueous) is a laboratory reagent used for pH adjustment, acidification of culture media and buffers, preparation of standards for acid–base titrations, dissolution of mineral carbonates, conditioning of ion-exchange resins, and sample acidification prior to analytical workflows such as ICP-OES and ion chromatography. It is also used for acid-washing of glassware and removal of alkaline residues.

This solution is compatible with common laboratory diluents and many inorganic salts. Store tightly closed to minimize hydrogen chloride off-gassing and concentration drift. Corrosive acid; handle with appropriate chemical hygiene and compatible materials.

  • 2.2% Hydrochloric Acid
  • pH Adjustment of Buffers and Media: Used to precisely titrate and set pH in sterile cell culture media, microbial broths (e.g., for E. coli), and laboratory buffers.

  • Chromatography Workflows: Employed to adjust mobile phase or elution conditions and to regenerate cation/anion exchange resins for protein and peptide purification.

  • Sample Preparation for Analytical Methods: Utilized to acidify samples for HPLC/LC-MS, stabilize analytes, and quench basic reactions prior to analysis.

  • Preparation of Tris-HCl and Other Reagents: Added to Tris or other bases to create defined pH buffer systems used in molecular biology and biochemistry.

  • Glassware and Equipment Acid Washing: Applied for removing mineral residues and inactivating nucleases on labware prior to sensitive assays.

  • Microbiology and Culture Maintenance: Used to adjust agar and broth pH, prepare selective media, and perform acid tolerance assays with organisms such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.
