Description
Formulation
Common Applications
Storage

Aqueous glycerol solution for general laboratory use. Clear, colorless, and fully miscible with water, suitable for applications that require a polyol cryoprotectant or osmolyte.

Common uses include preparing microbial glycerol stocks, stabilizing sensitive reagents in aqueous systems, adjusting solution density for cushion or gradient centrifugation, and supporting cryopreservation workflows for bacteria and yeast such as Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

  • 40%(v/v) Glycerol
  • Bacterial Glycerol Stocks: Long-term cryopreservation of E. coli and other bacteria by preparing 15–25% freezer stocks using 40%(v/v) Glycerol.

  • Competent Cell Preparation (Electroporation): Diluted to 10% for washing and resuspending cells prior to electroporation to enhance viability and transformation efficiency.

  • Protein and Enzyme Stabilization: Added to storage buffers to protect proteins and enzymes from denaturation and freeze–thaw damage.

  • Sample Loading for Gel Electrophoresis: Increases sample density in DNA/RNA/protein loading buffers to ensure wells are properly loaded.

  • Density Gradients: Prepared as glycerol gradients (e.g., 10–30%) for ultracentrifugation-based separation of protein and nucleic acid complexes.

  • Phage and Plasmid Storage: Serves as a cryoprotectant for bacteriophage preparations and plasmid-containing bacterial stocks.

  • Carbon Source in Microbial Culture: Used as a non-fermentable carbon source in defined media, including minimal media for E. coli.
