Description
Formulation
Common Applications
Storage

Aqueous glycerol solution for laboratory use in microbial preservation, sample dilution, and reagent preparation.

Commonly used to prepare cryogenic stocks of E. coli and other bacteria by mixing with cell suspensions prior to storage at −80 °C or in liquid nitrogen.

Applicable as an osmoprotective component in buffer systems and as a density modifier for gradient preparations and enzyme storage buffers.

  • 50% (v/v) Glycerol
  • Bacterial Glycerol Stocks: Long-term cryopreservation of Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and other strains at -80°C by mixing culture with 50% (v/v) Glycerol to 15–25% final.

  • Clone and Library Archiving: Sterile 0.3 mL cryovials streamline high-throughput storage of bacterial isolates and plasmid-bearing clones using 50% (v/v) Glycerol.

  • Enzyme and Protein Stabilization: Prevents freeze–thaw inactivation; prepare storage buffers with 10–50% final glycerol using 50% (v/v) Glycerol as a sterile stock.

  • SDS-PAGE Sample Preparation: Increases sample density and stability in Laemmli buffer; add 50% (v/v) Glycerol to achieve typical 10% final in loading buffer.

  • DNA/RNA Loading Dyes: Raises sample density for gel electrophoresis wells; dilute with 50% (v/v) Glycerol to target 30–50% final in loading mixes.

  • Glycerol Gradient Ultracentrifugation: Preparation of density gradients for protein, ribonucleoprotein, and virus particle separation using 50% (v/v) Glycerol as a stock.

  • Cryoprotection for Yeast and Fungi: Long-term storage of Saccharomyces and other yeasts by adjusting cultures to 15–25% glycerol using 50% (v/v) Glycerol.

  • Protein Crystallography Cryoprotection: Mitigates ice formation in crystal harvesting and data collection by titrating from 50% (v/v) Glycerol to optimal final percentages.

  • Low-Temperature Enzyme Assays: Maintains catalytic activity and reduces aggregation in cold-room workflows with 5–20% final glycerol prepared from 50% (v/v) Glycerol.
