20% (w/v) Galactose Solution provides D-(+)-galactose in a ready-to-use format for laboratory applications requiring a defined monosaccharide source.

Common uses include supplementation of culture media as a carbon source for galactose-utilizing organisms such as Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, induction of GAL promoter–regulated expression in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and investigations of carbohydrate metabolism involving the Leloir pathway.

  • 20% (w/v) D-(+)-Galactose
  • Yeast GAL Promoter Induction: Added as a sterile 20% (w/v) D-(+)-Galactose stock to induce GAL1/GAL10-driven gene expression in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

  • Carbon Source for Microbial Culture: Supplementation of defined media with D-(+)-Galactose to study sugar utilization and growth kinetics in Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis.

  • Mammalian Cell Metabolic Assays: Preparation of galactose-based DMEM to assess mitochondrial respiration and oxidative phosphorylation dependence.

  • Leloir Pathway Enzyme Assays: Substrate for galactokinase (GALK), galactose-1-phosphate uridyltransferase (GALT), and UDP-galactose 4-epimerase (GALE) activity measurements.

  • Lectin Binding and Glycan Studies: Competitor/substrate in assays with galactose-specific lectins (e.g., RCA I, PNA) and for glycoprotein/glycan characterization.

  • Reporter and Operon Studies: Induction of gal operon reporters to analyze transcriptional regulation and carbohydrate transport in Escherichia coli.

  • Minimal Media and Fermentation: Carbon source in minimal media formulations to evaluate metabolic flux, fermentation profiles, and diauxic shifts.

  • Polysaccharide and EPS Production: Feedstock for biosynthesis of galactose-containing exopolysaccharides in microbial cultures, including Escherichia coli.

  • Metabolic Disease Models: In vitro models of galactosemia and carbohydrate intolerance using controlled D-(+)-Galactose supplementation.

  • Transport and Uptake Studies: Competitive uptake assays and transporter characterization using D-(+)-Galactose in bacteria such as Escherichia coli.
