50 mg/mL Erythromycin Solution is a macrolide antibiotic stock for laboratory applications. Erythromycin targets the bacterial 50S ribosomal subunit and is used to inhibit protein synthesis in susceptible organisms.

This solution is used for selection and maintenance of erythromycin-resistant strains and plasmids in Gram-positive bacteria and, with appropriate resistance markers, in certain Gram-negative hosts. Common laboratory hosts include Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptomyces spp., and Escherichia coli carrying erythromycin resistance determinants.

  • 50mg/mL Erythromycin
  • Ethyl Alcohol
  • Antibiotic Selection in Gram-Positive Bacteria: Selects and maintains erm-marked plasmids/strains in organisms such as Bacillus subtilis, Streptomyces, and Corynebacterium.

  • Preparation of Selective Media: Sterile, ethanol-based 50 mg/mL stock for post-autoclave addition to broths and agar to achieve working concentrations for selection.

  • Cloning and Genetic Engineering: Enables selection/counterselection in transformation, conjugation, and genome editing workflows in erythromycin-sensitive hosts (e.g., Lactococcus, Clostridium).

  • Maintenance of Shuttle Vectors: Supports stability of erm-bearing shuttle plasmids in Gram-positive hosts during routine passaging.

  • Bacterial Growth Suppression in Mixed Cultures: Inhibits protein synthesis to suppress susceptible competitors when enriching erythromycin-resistant strains.

  • Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing: Used to determine erythromycin sensitivity profiles of Gram-positive isolates under defined conditions.
