500 mM EDTA, pH 8.0 is a concentrated chelating solution formulated with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid adjusted to pH 8.0 to ensure solubility and effective sequestration of divalent cations such as Mg2+ and Ca2+.

At this concentration, EDTA is used to inhibit nuclease activity by limiting essential metal cofactors, stabilize DNA and RNA during extraction and storage, and control metal-dependent reactions in molecular biology workflows.

Typical applications include preparation of TE and related buffers, conditioning of solutions for plasmid purification and genomic DNA/RNA isolation, and metal ion chelation in cell lysis, enzyme reaction setups, and wash steps for laboratory plastics and resins. Suitable for workflows involving E. coli and other routine microbial and nucleic acid procedures where control of divalent cations is required.

  • 500mM Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)
  • Nucleic Acid Preservation (TE Buffer): Component of TE buffer to chelate Mg2+/Ca2+, protecting DNA/RNA from nuclease degradation.

  • DNA/RNA Extraction and Lysis: Inhibits metal-dependent nucleases during cell lysis and purification workflows.

  • Protein Purification: Chelates divalent cations to inhibit metalloproteases and protect proteins during purification and storage.

  • Agarose Gel Electrophoresis Buffers: Used to make TAE/TBE buffers; EDTA chelates Mg2+ to safeguard nucleic acids during electrophoresis.

  • Enzyme Reaction Quenching: Stops Mg2+-dependent enzymatic reactions (e.g., polymerases, nucleases) by chelation.

  • Competent Cell Preparation: Weakens the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli to facilitate DNA uptake.

  • Metal Ion Depletion in Solutions: Removes trace divalent cations from buffers, reagents, and glassware to prevent unwanted catalytic activity.

  • Microbiology and Media Formulation: Controls bioavailable metal ions in culture media to modulate microbial growth and enzyme activity.

  • pH: 8.00 ± 0.10
