Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) Broth is a general-purpose, nutrient-rich medium for cultivation of a wide range of bacteria and yeasts. It supports the growth of fastidious organisms, including Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Enterococcus, Neisseria, and a variety of gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungi such as yeasts.

Typical uses include enrichment of clinical, food, and environmental specimens, preparation of inocula for downstream testing, sterility testing workflows, and cultivation under aerobic or anaerobic incubation.

  • 3.7% Brain Heart Infusion Broth
  • General Cultivation and Enrichment: Routine growth of fastidious bacteria using 3.7% Brain Heart Infusion Broth (BHI), including Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Enterococcus, and Listeria monocytogenes.

  • Clinical Specimen Recovery: Enrichment of low-abundance organisms from blood, CSF, and wound samples (e.g., Streptococcus pneumoniae; Haemophilus influenzae with supplements).

  • Yeast and Fungal Cultivation: Growth and maintenance of yeasts such as Candida spp. for identification and susceptibility workflows.

  • Sterility and Growth Promotion Testing: Positive controls and growth promotion testing (GPT) to verify media and process performance with fastidious organisms.

  • Food and Environmental Microbiology: Enrichment and subculture of stressed or injured organisms from foods and surfaces, including Listeria monocytogenes.

  • Antimicrobial Studies (Fastidious Organisms): Preparation of inocula, growth controls, and time-kill assays for Gram-positive pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus spp.

  • Biofilm Assays: Support for biofilm formation and eradication studies with Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Enterococcus faecalis.

  • Bacteriophage Workflows: Host cultivation and phage amplification using BHI-grown hosts (e.g., Staphylococcus or Streptococcus phages).

  • Seed Cultures and Scale-Up: Preparation of starter cultures for downstream fermentation or assay setup with fastidious bacteria.

  • Quality Control of Disinfectants: Neutralization/enrichment controls to assess disinfectant efficacy against organisms like Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus spp.

  • pH: 7.40 ± 0.10
