Brain Heart Infusion Modified Broth is an infusion-based nutrient medium used for the cultivation and maintenance of a wide range of bacteria and yeasts, including fastidious organisms. Its enriched composition supports growth of organisms from clinical, environmental, and food samples, and it is suitable for general propagation and recovery from low inocula.

Typical applications include culture of streptococci and other fastidious species, as well as nonfastidious bacteria and fungi such as Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus spp., Listeria monocytogenes, Neisseria meningitidis, and yeasts including Candida albicans.

  • Brain Heart Infusion Broth (Modified)
  • Cultivation of Fastidious Microorganisms: Supports robust growth of Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Enterococcus, Neisseria, Haemophilus, and yeasts/molds for routine culture and maintenance.

  • Clinical Specimen Enrichment: Used as an enrichment broth for low-inoculum samples, including blood culture subculture and recovery of stressed or slow-growing organisms.

  • Sterility and Growth Promotion Testing: Employed in pharmaceutical and bioprocess QC to verify sterility and perform growth promotion tests of media.

  • Food and Environmental Testing: Pre-enrichment of samples to recover sublethally injured organisms, including Listeria, Salmonella, and other Enterobacteriaceae.

  • Antimicrobial Studies: Applied for MIC/kill-curve assessments and tolerance studies of fastidious bacteria when Mueller-Hinton is not suitable.

  • Biofilm and Virulence Assays: Provides nutrient-rich conditions for biofilm formation, adherence, and virulence factor studies.

  • Fungal and Yeast Culture: Supports growth and recovery of organisms such as Candida and filamentous fungi.

  • General Laboratory Maintenance: Used for preparing starter cultures, propagation prior to identification, and subculture of clinical isolates.
