Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) Agar Plates are nutrient-rich, ready-to-use solid media formulated for the cultivation of a wide range of fastidious and non-fastidious microorganisms. The medium is based on brain and heart infusions with peptones, carbohydrates, and buffering salts solidified with agar to provide consistent colony development under aerobic or CO2-enriched conditions.

BHI Agar is commonly used for isolation, cultivation, and maintenance of organisms such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Listeria monocytogenes, and yeasts including Candida albicans. Typical applications include routine culturing, colony morphology assessment, and enumeration in clinical, food, and industrial microbiology workflows.

  • 3.70% Brain Heart Infusion
  • 1.50% Agar
  • General Cultivation of Fastidious Bacteria: Supports robust growth of organisms such as Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Enterococcus, Listeria, and Neisseria on 3.70% Brain Heart Infusion with 1.50% Agar.

  • Clinical Microbiology Isolation and Maintenance: Used for routine isolation, subculture, and stock maintenance of nutritionally demanding clinical isolates.

  • Quality Control and Sterility Testing: Employed as a rich, non-selective medium for growth promotion testing and detection of microbial contamination.

  • Environmental Monitoring and Bioburden Assessment: Plates exposed or contact-printed to recover a broad spectrum of environmental bacteria and yeasts.

  • Antibiotic Screening and Growth Recovery: Used to recover stressed or injured cells prior to susceptibility or downstream testing.

  • Anaerobic and Capnophilic Cultivation: Suitable base medium for growth under anaerobic or CO2-enriched conditions for organisms like Clostridium and Haemophilus (with appropriate atmosphere/supplements).

  • Fungal and Yeast Recovery: Supports growth of yeasts such as Candida spp.; also used for molds when supplemented.

  • Biofilm and Surface-Associated Studies: Provides a nutrient-rich solid surface for biofilm formation and colony morphology analysis.

  • Bacteriophage and Bacterial Interaction Assays: Rich base agar for plaque assays and host range studies.

  • Food, Water, and Pharmaceutical Testing: Non-selective enumeration of heterotrophic bacteria from product and process samples.
