Agar, Molecular Biology Grade is a purified gelling agent derived from red algae for solidifying microbiological media used in molecular biology workflows. It enables preparation of plates and slants for cultivation and maintenance of organisms such as E. coli, yeast, and fungi when combined with appropriate nutrients and selective agents.

This grade is tested for low levels of DNase, RNase, and protease activity and is suitable for applications including cloning, selection, and colony screening. The material is heat-stable and sterilizable by autoclaving for routine laboratory media preparation.

  • Agar
  • Molecular Biology Grade
  • Microbial Culture Media Solidification: Primary gelling agent for plates and slants to grow bacteria (e.g., Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus) and fungi.

  • Colony Isolation and Enumeration: Enables streaking, spread-plating, and CFU counting from mixed or environmental samples.

  • Selective/Differential Media Preparation: Supports antibiotic selection, indicator dyes, and chromogenic substrates for strain screening.

  • Cloning and Transformation Plating: Used for recombinant selection and blue-white screening of Escherichia coli on LB-agar with antibiotics and IPTG/X-Gal.

  • Phage Plaque Assays: Employed as soft/top agar overlays for bacteriophage propagation and plaque visualization on bacterial lawns.

  • Bacterial Motility Assays: Low-percentage soft agar to assess swimming and swarming behavior of motile species.

  • Replica Plating: Transfers colonies between agar plates to screen phenotypes, nutrient requirements, or drug resistance.

  • Yeast and Fungal Cultivation: Gelling agent for media used with yeast and filamentous fungi in genetic and metabolic studies.

  • Plant Tissue Culture: Sterile gelling matrix for solid plant media in micropropagation and transformation workflows.

  • Strain Storage and Maintenance: Preparation of agar slants and stabs for short- to medium-term preservation of microbial stocks.
