Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) Agar Plates are a general-purpose, nutrient-rich medium for cultivation and maintenance of a broad range of bacteria and yeasts, including fastidious organisms. The solid agar format provides a convenient surface for isolation, subculture, and enumeration from clinical, food, and environmental samples.

Typical applications include recovery and propagation of Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp., Enterococcus spp., and other commensal or pathogenic bacteria, as well as yeasts. Plates may also serve as a base for supplementation, such as blood or antibiotics, when required by specific laboratory protocols.

  • 3.7% Brain Heart Infusion
  • 1.5% Agar
  • General Cultivation: Rich 3.7% Brain Heart Infusion, 1.5% Agar plates support robust growth of fastidious and non-fastidious organisms from clinical, food, and environmental samples.

  • Isolation and Subculture: Routine streaking and subculturing of organisms such as Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Enterococcus, Listeria, and Bacillus on 100 mm, 30 mL fill plates.

  • Recovery of Stressed Cells: Resuscitation of heat-, cold-, or sanitizer-injured bacteria prior to downstream testing.

  • Colony Enumeration: Spread-plate and pour-plate colony counts where a nutrient-rich surface is required.

  • Maintenance of Stock Cultures: Short-term storage and routine passage of clinical and laboratory isolates.

  • Antimicrobial Testing: MIC/agar dilution and screen assays for fastidious organisms when methods specify BHI agar.

  • Yeast and Fungal Cultivation: Growth of yeasts such as Candida and Cryptococcus on a nutrient-dense agar base.

  • Bacteriophage Work: Plaque assays and propagation on susceptible bacterial lawns requiring a rich medium.

  • Quality Control and Growth Promotion: Positive control growth checks for sterility and media performance testing.

  • Food and Environmental Microbiology: Recovery and monitoring of hygienic indicator and spoilage organisms from process surfaces and samples.
