Privacy Policy

Privacy Policy

This policy describes how Alpha Teknova, Inc. (“Teknova”) handles two categories of sensitive information: personal information collected through our website, and proprietary formulation and specification data that customers share with us to enable custom manufacturing. We recognize that customer formulations represent significant investments in research and development, and we apply the same standard of care to protect both types of information. The sections below describe how Teknova collects, uses, and safeguards that information.

What information do we collect?

• We collect information from you when you register on the site, place an order, enter a contest or sweepstakes, respond to a survey or communication such as email, or participate in another site feature.

• When ordering or registering, we may ask you for your name, email address, mailing address, phone number, credit card information, or other information. You may, however, visit our site anonymously.

• We also collect information about gift recipients so that we can fulfill the gift purchase. The information we collect about gift recipients is not used for marketing purposes.

• Like many websites, we use “cookies” to enhance your experience and gather information about visitors and visits to our websites. Please refer to the “Do we use ‘cookies’?” section below for information about cookies and how we use them.

How do we use your information?

We may use the information we collect from you when you register, purchase products, enter a contest or promotion, respond to a survey or marketing communication, surf the website, or use certain other site features in the following ways:

• To personalize your site experience and to allow us to deliver the type of content and product offerings in which you are most interested.

• To allow us to better support you when responding to your customer service requests.

• To quickly process your transactions.

• To administer a contest, promotion, survey, or other site feature.

If you have opted in to receive our email newsletter, we may send you periodic emails. If you would no longer like to receive these emails from us, please refer to the “How can you opt out, remove, or modify information you have provided to us?” section below. If you have not opted in to receive email newsletters, you will not receive these emails. Visitors who register or participate in other site features such as marketing programs and ‘members-only’ content will be given a choice to be on our email list and receive email communications from us, or not.

How do we protect visitor information?

We deploy a variety of security measures to maintain the safety of your personal information. Your personal information is contained behind secured networks and is only accessible by a limited number of people who have special access rights to such systems and are required to keep the information confidential. When you place orders or access your personal information, we offer the use of a secure server. All sensitive/credit information you supply is transmitted via Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology and then encrypted into our databases where it is accessible only as described above.

Teknova does not store any credit card information on its site. Rather, Teknova uses Authorize.net to store customer payment information in a highly secured database for a limited period of time. However, all sensitive or personally identifying customer information that is stored by Authorize.net is masked in both the account dashboard used to manage payments and the transaction reports generated from it. Additionally, to maintain compliance with credit card security compliance programs, internal access to customer information is highly restricted. Once customer payment information has been stored for 120 days (from the date it was originally received), Authorize.net purges it and stores only masked information.

Cybersecurity practices

Protecting customer information is a never-ending task. With that in mind, Teknova maintains a cybersecurity program that includes the following practices:

Regular penetration testing: We engage third-party security firms to test our systems against simulated real-world attack scenarios, with findings tracked through formal remediation processes.

Ongoing security audits: Our security posture is reviewed regularly against industry frameworks and best practices.

Managed Detection and Response (MDR): A managed security operations center monitors our systems around the clock to detect, investigate, and respond to potential threats in real time.

Patch management: We maintain a patching program to equip our operating systems, applications, and network infrastructure with the latest security updates.

How do we use AI tools?

Teknova uses approved AI tools to support internal productivity, including drafting documents, analyzing data, and streamlining day-to-day operations. The AI platforms we use are enterprise-grade: Microsoft 365 Copilot, embedded within our Microsoft productivity tools, and Anthropic’s Claude, accessed through a dedicated enterprise plan. Where AI is used within customer-facing tools such as the custom order configurator, additional infrastructure-level protections apply, as described in the next section.

Our AI usage practices:

AI model training exclusion: Teknova operates both Copilot and Claude under enterprise commercial terms that contractually prohibit Microsoft and Anthropic from using any data processed through our plans to train or improve their AI models. This protection is built into our agreements rather than being dependent on a configurable setting.

Approved enterprise platforms only: Customer information is processed exclusively through the approved enterprise AI platforms described above.

Human-led quality decisions: Every quality decision about a customer product is made by a qualified Teknova team member. AI tools serve in a supporting role only.

Reviewed before deployment: Every AI tool used at Teknova is reviewed, approved, and configured by our IT team for enterprise data protection before deployment.

If you have specific questions about our AI usage practices, please contact us at privacy@teknova.com.

The custom order configurator

The custom order configurator is a Teknova-built tool that customers can use to enter and submit formulation and specification details for custom orders. Because the configurator handles proprietary customer information, we designed it with the following safeguards:

Hosted within Teknova’s own cloud environment: The configurator runs in Teknova’s Microsoft Azure tenancy, within our own security boundary, rather than in shared or multi-tenant environments.

Security review before deployment: The configurator and updates to it undergo a comprehensive security review before going into production, including code review, vulnerability assessment, and verification of data handling practices.

Role-based access controls and audit trails: The configurator enforces the same role-based access controls and logging applied across our enterprise platforms. Every interaction with customer data is attributable and auditable.

Isolated AI processing: Where the configurator uses AI to interpret or organize customer specifications, that processing runs in AWS Bedrock (Amazon's managed AI service) within AWS’s own infrastructure. Inputs and outputs remain inside the secure AWS environment, the AI model vendor operates outside the data path, and data is handled in real time with no retention on the AI provider’s side.

Regional data processing: AWS Bedrock allows us to pin processing to specific geographic regions, so customer data is processed where it is expected to be.

We store and manage customer specifications submitted through the configurator within Teknova’s enterprise systems under the same access controls, encryption, and retention practices that apply to other customer order information.

Do we use “cookies"?

Yes. Cookies are small files that a site or its service provider transfers to your computer’s hard drive through your web browser (if you allow) that enable the site’s or service provider’s systems to recognize your browser and capture and remember certain information. For instance, we use cookies to help us remember and process the items in your shopping cart. We also use them to help us understand your preferences based on previous or current site activity, which enables us to provide you with better service. We also use cookies to help us compile aggregate data about site traffic and site interaction so that we can offer better site experiences and tools in the future.

We may contract with third-party service providers to assist us in better understanding visitors to our site. These service providers are not permitted to use the information collected on our behalf except to help us conduct and improve our business. This includes the use of cookies and other tracking technologies to collect information about your website activity. When you visit or log in to our website, cookies and similar technologies may be used by our online data partners or vendors to associate these activities with other personal information they or others have about you, including by association with your email. We (or service providers on our behalf) may then send communications and marketing to these email addresses. You may opt out of receiving this advertising by visiting https://app.retention.com/optout. We may also use this information to display targeted ads and/or messaging on other websites through third-party advertising platforms, such as Google, which enables us to serve ads to users who have previously interacted with our website. If you would like to control the ads you see on Google or opt out of ads completely, visit Google's My Ad Center.

You can also choose to have your computer warn you each time a cookie is being sent, or you can choose to turn off all cookies. You do this through your browser (like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Apple Safari) settings. Each browser is a little different, so look at your browser Help menu to learn the correct way to modify your cookie settings or visit the Network Advertising Initiative opt-out page to manage your browser’s opt-out options. If you turn cookies off, you won’t have access to many features that make your site experience more efficient and some of our services will not function properly. However, you can still place orders over the telephone by contacting customer service.

Do we disclose the information we collect to outside parties?

We do not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer to outside parties your personally identifiable information unless we provide you with advance notice, except as described below. The term “outside parties” does not include www.teknova.com. It also does not include website hosting partners and other parties who assist us in operating our website, conducting our business, or serving you, so long as those parties agree to keep this information confidential. We may also release your information when we believe release is appropriate to comply with the law, enforce our site policies, or protect ours or others’ rights, property, or safety. However, non-personally identifiable visitor information may be provided to other parties for marketing, advertising, or other uses.

How can you opt out, remove or modify information you have provided to us?

To modify your email subscriptions, please let us know by modifying your preferences in the “My Account” section. Please note that due to email production schedules you may receive any emails already in production.

To delete all of your online account information from our database, sign into the “My Account” section of our site and remove your shipping addresses, billing addresses, and payment information. Please note that we may maintain information about an individual sales transaction in order to effectuate that transaction and for record keeping.
