40 mg/mL X-Gal Solution is a chromogenic substrate used for β-galactosidase–mediated blue/white screening in molecular cloning. It supports visual differentiation of colonies based on lacZ α-complementation on appropriate indicator media, commonly in conjunction with IPTG and host strains such as E. coli.

This product is supplied as a flammable liquid regulated as Dangerous Goods: Class 3, UN1993, Packing Group III; 10 L limited quantity (3/UN1993/III(L)).

  • 40mg/mL X-Gal in Dimethyl Formamide
  • Blue-White Screening in Cloning: 40mg/mL X-Gal in Dimethyl Formamide used with IPTG for lacZ α-complementation to distinguish recombinant colonies in Escherichia coli.

  • lacZ Reporter Gene Assays: Chromogenic substrate for β-galactosidase to quantify gene expression in bacteria, yeast, and mammalian cells.

  • Phage Plaque Screening: Visual identification of recombinant bacteriophage via blue/white plaque differentiation on indicator plates.

  • Colony and Filter-Lift Assays: Detection of β-galactosidase activity on membranes for rapid screening of transformants.

  • BAC/Fosmid/Plasmid Library Screening: High-throughput blue-white selection to identify inserts across large construct libraries.

  • Senescence-Associated β-Gal Staining: Histochemical detection of cellular senescence via β-gal activity at acidic pH.

  • Transgenic and Tissue Staining (in situ): Visualization of lacZ-tagged cells and tissues in developmental and anatomical studies.

  • Agar Plate Indicator Supplementation: Added to LB or selective agar for routine cloning screens in E. coli.

  • β-Galactosidase Expression QC: Verification of inducible expression systems and strain phenotypes expressing lacZ.

  • Educational and Training Labs: Demonstrations of gene regulation and enzyme activity using visible blue product formation.
