Tryptic Soy Agar II Plates with 5% Sheep’s Blood are general-purpose, blood-enriched agar plates for cultivation of aerobic and facultative anaerobic bacteria and observation of hemolytic reactions. Defibrinated sheep’s blood provides additional growth factors and enables visual differentiation of alpha, beta, and non-hemolytic (gamma) patterns on the agar surface.

These plates are suitable for routine cultivation and hemolysis assessment of organisms such as Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus aureus, among others.

  • 1.5% Tryptone H
  • 0.5% Soytone
  • 0.5% Sodium Chloride
  • 1.5% Agar
  • 5.0% Sheep's Blood
  • Primary Isolation from Clinical Specimens: Enriched, nonselective medium for recovery of fastidious and nonfastidious bacteria from blood, throat, wound, and respiratory samples.

  • Hemolysis Differentiation: Assessment of alpha, beta, and gamma hemolysis patterns to help identify streptococci and related organisms (e.g., Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumoniae).

  • Colony Morphology Assessment: Observation of colony size, color, and hemolysis for organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, and Streptococcus agalactiae.

  • Throat Culture Screening: Detection of Group A Streptococcus pyogenes from pharyngeal specimens.

  • CAMP Test: Demonstration of enhanced hemolysis for identification of Streptococcus agalactiae in the presence of Staphylococcus aureus.

  • Subculture and Maintenance: Routine subculturing of clinical isolates that benefit from an enriched, blood-supplemented base.

  • Quality Control Verification: Performance testing with reference strains to confirm expected hemolysis reactions and growth characteristics.

  • Environmental and Product Monitoring: Recovery of aerobic bacteria, including hemolytic species, from surfaces, water, and process samples.

  • Differentiation of Respiratory Pathogens: Supportive growth and hemolysis observation for organisms encountered in sputum cultures (e.g., Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus).

  • General Microbial Enumeration (Enriched): Enhanced detection of stressed or fastidious bacteria compared to unsupplemented media.
