Sabouraud Dextrose Broth is an acidified, carbohydrate-rich liquid medium designed for the cultivation and enrichment of yeasts and molds from clinical, environmental, and industrial samples. The peptone base supplies amino acids and nitrogen sources, while dextrose provides readily metabolizable carbohydrate to support fungal biomass formation.

The medium’s low pH and elevated carbohydrate content help reduce bacterial interference during fungal recovery. It may be supplemented with antibacterial agents, such as chloramphenicol or gentamicin, to suppress bacterial flora when required. Suitable for the cultivation of yeasts (e.g., Candida species) and filamentous fungi (e.g., Aspergillus and Penicillium species) in quality control, microbiology research, and environmental monitoring workflows.

  • 1.0% Tryptone
  • 2.0% Cerelose Anhydrous Dextrose (Glucose)
  • Cultivation of Yeasts and Molds: Enrichment and routine growth of fungi (e.g., Candida spp., Aspergillus spp., dermatophytes) from clinical, food, and environmental samples.

  • Fungal Enumeration: Quantification of yeasts and molds via broth enrichment and serial dilution prior to plating.

  • Sample Enrichment: Recovery of stressed or low-abundance fungal organisms from complex or inhibitory matrices.

  • Sterility Testing: Detection of fungal contamination in pharmaceuticals, bioprocess intermediates, and cosmetics.

  • Environmental Monitoring: Broth-based enrichment for air, surface, and water samples to detect fungal bioburden.

  • Food and Beverage QC: Detection of spoilage yeasts and molds in beverages, dairy, and bakery products.

  • Clinical Mycology Enrichment: Pre-enrichment of specimens (skin, nail, mucosal swabs) to improve fungal recovery prior to selective plating.

  • Inoculum Preparation: Generation of standardized fungal inocula for downstream assays and challenge studies.

  • Maintenance of Fungal Cultures: Short-term propagation and subculture of yeasts and molds for routine lab use.

  • Recovery of Acid-Tolerant Bacteria: Occasional enrichment of aciduric organisms such as Lactobacillus in mixed microbial samples.

  • pH: 5.60 ± 0.10
