SDS Solution is an aqueous preparation of sodium dodecyl sulfate used for denaturation of proteins and disruption of lipid membranes in biochemical sample preparation and electrophoresis workflows.

Applications include preparation of protein samples for SDS-PAGE, maintaining a uniform charge-to-mass ratio during electrophoresis, inclusion in Laemmli sample buffer and related protocols, solubilization of membrane proteins, and lysis of bacterial cells such as E. coli for protein extraction.

Store at ambient temperature. The solution may precipitate at lower temperatures; warm gently and mix to ensure complete dissolution before use. Compatible with common Tris–glycine and MES/MOPS buffer systems used in gel electrophoresis and Western blotting workflows.

  • 20% Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate
  • SDS-PAGE: Denatures proteins and imparts uniform negative charge for electrophoretic separation.

  • Protein Sample Preparation: Denaturation and solubilization of proteins prior to Western blotting and other analyses.

  • Membrane Protein Extraction: Solubilizes hydrophobic and membrane-associated proteins from cells and tissues.

  • Cell Lysis: Disrupts cell membranes, including alkaline lysis of Escherichia coli for plasmid isolation.

  • Nucleic Acid Purification: Facilitates deproteinization during DNA/RNA extraction workflows.

  • Enzyme Inactivation: Inactivates proteases, RNases, and DNases during sample processing.

  • Laboratory Decontamination: Removes and inactivates proteinaceous contaminants on equipment and plastics.

  • Virus Inactivation: Disrupts lipid envelopes to render samples noninfectious for downstream handling.
