50% PEG 8000 Solution is an aqueous preparation of Polyethylene Glycol 8000 for laboratory use in molecular biology and biochemistry workflows. As a high–molecular weight polymer, it provides a macromolecular crowding environment and facilitates volume-excluding conditions in aqueous systems.

Applications include precipitation and concentration of nucleic acids, proteins, and bacteriophages, phage titering workflows with Escherichia coli, protoplast fusion methods, and crowding in enzymatic assays and protein crystallization screens. This solution is suitable for use as a component in PEG/NaCl phage precipitation protocols and other procedures requiring PEG 8000–based crowding or precipitation conditions.

  • 50% Polyethylene Glycol 8000
  • Nucleic Acid Precipitation and Size Selection: Used with NaCl to precipitate and size-select plasmid DNA and PCR products.

  • Bacteriophage Concentration: Employed with NaCl to precipitate and concentrate phages (e.g., M13, lambda, T4) from Escherichia coli lysates.

  • Protein Crystallization: Serves as a precipitating agent in protein crystallography screening and optimization.

  • Macromolecular Crowding in Molecular Biology: Enhances yield/specificity in PCR, ligation, and nucleic acid hybridization by crowding effects.

  • Virus Concentration: Concentrates enveloped and non-enveloped viruses from cell culture and environmental samples (e.g., wastewater).

  • Protein Precipitation and Fractionation: Facilitates selective protein precipitation for clarification and concentration workflows.
