20% (v/v) Glycerol Solution is an aqueous glycerol reagent commonly used for preparing freezer stocks of E. coli and other bacteria, for cryopreservation of microbial and cell samples, for dilution of enzymes and reagents requiring glycerol stabilization, and for density adjustment in molecular biology and biochemistry workflows.

  • 20% (v/v) Glycerol
  • Cryopreservation of Microbial Stocks: Used to prepare long-term freezer stocks of Escherichia coli, other bacteria, and yeast at −80°C (final 15–25% 20% (v/v) Glycerol).

  • Preparation/Storage of Electrocompetent Cells: Used to wash and store electrocompetent Escherichia coli (commonly diluted to 10% glycerol for final use).

  • Enzyme and Protein Stabilization: Added to purified enzymes/proteins to enhance stability and reduce freeze–thaw damage (20% (v/v) Glycerol used to achieve typical 5–50% final glycerol).

  • Sample Density for Gel Loading: Increases sample density for DNA/RNA/protein loading onto gels; mixed with samples or used to prepare loading dyes.

  • Gradient Centrifugation: Component for simple glycerol gradients (e.g., 10–40%) to separate macromolecular complexes.

  • PCR Additive for Difficult Templates: Added at low percentages to improve amplification of GC‑rich targets by stabilizing polymerase and altering DNA melting behavior.

  • Restriction/Ligation Reaction Support: Helps maintain enzyme activity and prevent freezing of small-volume reactions when used at low percentages.

  • Carbon Source in Microbial Media: Supplement for culture media as a metabolizable carbon source for organisms like Escherichia coli (diluted from 20% (v/v) Glycerol to appropriate final concentrations).
